The scourge of motorcycle racers everywhere, arm pump is a fairly complex condition whose causes and treatments remain somewhat controversial. While a lack of fitness (both general and specific) is generally regarded as the number one cause of arm pump, other factors can play a significant role. In particular, the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds the muscles of the forearm can become stiff and tense with age and/or repetitive microtrauma. This alteration in tissue compliance can and will alter blood flow creating an environment ripe for chronic exertional compartment syndrome (the “sciency” term for arm pump).
Fortunately, there is hope.
Stretching of the forearms is a good start.

Soft-tissue work is another. Below is our massage therapist, Dale Londos, demonstrating self treatment for the wrist flexors and extensors. While certainly no substitute for expert hands, these simple techniques can go a long way in preventing and/or relieving arm pump.
